The Project

This project was put together to highlight and to demand the protection of the common good, in Scotland.

Why?

1. Because it is “common” to all for the “good” of all: Its assets are worth lots of money that could be used to do good things.

2. It is a tool that is useful in community organising and demands, by its nature, democratic accountability.

3. It has a history that is rooted in our communities that goes back hundreds of years.

4. We owe it to our children – that they should benefit from what we have enjoyed for so long, the freedom of our parks, public institutions, and all the many treasures that have been in public ownership for all these years – which forms a big part of our common good.

Ask the question: What is it we need to stem the breaking-up of our communities?

More things to keep us apart? More detachment, fear and violence, privatisation, and exclusion – for lack of any common goals or responsibility? Shouldn’t our common good, be used to challenge some of these things? That’s what this site is about – looking at these ideas.

Protecting the common good is part of an education process of discovery – but not in the class room – it is out in the world doing things, where the real education lives. This project will attempt to make the process as interesting and enjoyable to as many people as possible. If you think of anything that would help this to happen -or if you have any questions – let us know

So. What “is” the common good?

There is a whole website here to explain things and ways to get involved – and there is a whole summer ahead of us to get out and see what is going on. The site will be in constant development trying out different ways to engage people and hopefully we can encourage other peoples ideas to run along side this one, to integrate with us, or how we can help each other out.

See workshops for more details

A general overview of the common good or the video for a rundown should get you started. Ways you can navigate through the site and instruction videos will be added. Take a look tell us what you think. Workshops coming soon
